Food Banker Spotlight – Danielle McIntyre, Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Danielle McIntyre of Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge.

What is your role in food banking?
I am the Executive Director with Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge

Describe a typical day in one word.
Multi-tasking

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
I have a background and passion for the not-for-profit sector and a desire to work for a cause greater than my own.

What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
Working with our community to define our role within the community, defining our mission statement and engaging our community to build our capacity to serve those in need.  We focus on food and facility and partner with community members and agencies to provide not just a hand out, but a hand up to those we serve.  Being mission driven has enabled us to purchase and renovate our own facility, which includes a community kitchen, learning garden, thrift store and volunteer program, as well as space for learning opportunities, outreach activities and community programming.

What is your greatest challenge in your current role?
Working with limited resources.  We are constantly challenged with being creative, innovative and responsive to the needs of our community.  Food banks often struggle with securing sustainable funding, and we are constantly looking for new ways to engage our community members in supporting our initiatives to provide for those in need.

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
That individuals and families were empowered with the ability to provide for their own food security.  I would wish for anyone struggling to put food on the table to experience this only temporarily, as they would be provided with the knowledge, skills and belief that they can provide for themselves and their families; and for those who have never fallen upon hard times, to empathise with those who have.

Which talent would you most like to have?
The ability to inspire ideas into action.

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
Relax.  If you put the time and effort in, things will work out as they should.

Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life
People who give more than they take, who work to the best of their ability, and those who are willing to put others ahead of themselves.

What is your idea of happiness?
To be content with what I have, comfortable in my surroundings, and loved by those I cherish.

What is your motto?
Find a way. Make it happen.

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I cry with TV, commercials and movies all the time!

Your theme song?
Humble and Kind – Tim McGraw
