Food Banker Spotlight – Brenda LeClair

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Brenda LeClair, who is the Executive Director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger for the past 35 years!

What is your role in food banking?

Executive director for 35 years.

What are your pronouns?

She/her

Describe a typical day in one word. 

Busy!!!

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?

At one point in my life, I found myself a single mom raising four children. I was fortunate enough to have strong supports but soon realized many did not. When I was asked to get involved in starting the Outreach, I felt it was a way to give back. I started and never looked back.

What is your greatest achievement in your current role?

My greatest achievement has been building awareness in the community as to the different levels of poverty that exist. Gaining the trust of those who come and those who give.  

What is your greatest challenge in your current role?

Greatest challenge is trying to continue making a difference while remaining positive that change can happen.

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada, what would it be?

That everyone had enough to live a decent life with affordable housing and nutritional food.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I would love to play the piano well.

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to get involved in something and use your voice to help others.

Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life.

My parents; they were always involved in community and taught me the value of giving back.

What is your idea of happiness?

Spending time with family and friends. Knowing that I am living my best life.

What is your motto?

Never judge, you never know!

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?

I love joking with my co-workers. Always a laugh and a hug.
