Food Banker Spotlight – Jo-Anne Turple

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Jo-Anne Turple, Manager of Volunteer Resources at Ottawa Food Bank.

Describe a typical day in one word. 

Dynamic

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?

I was drawn to the Ottawa Food Bank based on its outstanding reputation and the work it has been doing now for 40 years in Ottawa.

What is your greatest achievement in your current role?

I’m excited to share that our Volunteer Resources team is working towards the Ottawa Food Bank’s adoption of the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement (CCVI) as promoted by Volunteer Canada.  The CCVI represents 10 standards of best practices for volunteer management.

What is your greatest challenge in your current role?

Seeing the ever-increasing need for food support in our community and the lack of resources to adequately address it

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?

A universal basic income for all Canadians

Which talent would you most like to have?

The ability to paint water colour landscapes!

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?

Know your worth.

Who are your heroes?  Fictional or real life

My maternal grandmother. She lost her husband at a young age and raised 4 children on her own. She supported her family by operating her own general store and post office.  She was the first “postmistress” in our community.

What is your idea of happiness?

A day spent outside on the water or in the woods with my husband and any time spent with family and friends.

What is your motto?

It’s always a matter of perspective.

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?

I have a motorcycle license.
