For 15 years, Loblaw Companies Ltd., its employees and its shoppers have helped food banks across Canada to feed more families through its biannual food drives. So far, this sustained commitment has resulted in more than 70 million meals for families in need. This holiday season, Loblaw is stepping forward once again to support communities from coast to coast to coast.
Due in large part to inflation, food banks nationwide are facing more demand than ever before. Just five years ago, these 5,500+ organizations saw around one million visits per month. But this year, that number was over two million, according to the HungerCount 2024 report from Food Banks Canada. Children accounted for nearly 700,000 of these monthly visits.
Given the urgency of helping food banks keep up with soaring levels of need, the latest Loblaw Companies Ltd. Feed More Families™ Food Drive, running between November 28 and December 24, is even more vital than ever.
There are two ways to participate: by making a cash donation at the checkout of any store where President’s Choice products are sold or by donating food items in the bin at the front of the store. All the Loblaw banner stores are participating in this campaign, and their names are listed at the end of this post.
Each store pairs up with a participating food bank in the local community and passes 100 per cent of donations on to that matched local food bank. To amplify the impact of donors’ generosity, Loblaw will match the first $100,000 of cash gifts collected through this year’s holiday campaign.
People who would prefer to donate food in-store during this campaign are encouraged to prioritize the following types of products, which food banks commonly require:
– canned meat and fish
– canned vegetables
– nut butters
– low-sugar canned fruit
– whole-grain foods (e.g. oatmeal, brown rice, barley)
– alternative milks (e.g. powdered milk, almond milk, rice milk)
There are currently 354 organizations benefiting from Feed More Families™ food drives. Feed Nova Scotia has been among the beneficiaries ever since the first such campaign in 2009. As a provincial food-banking association, it collects resources and distributes them to a large food-bank network. It is currently matched with 16 Loblaw stores.
“The ongoing support of partners like Loblaw is integral in our ability to try and meet the need of food-insecure individuals and families across Nova Scotia,” says Corrina Parent, Feed Nova Scotia’s communications manager.
“Campaigns like this help the entire Feed Nova Scotia network of 140 food banks, meal programs and shelters, which served nearly 60,000 Nova Scotians last year alone,” she continues. “Nearly 30% of Nova Scotians live in a food-insecure household, and we are grateful for all the efforts of Loblaw and their Feed More Families campaign to help us, and the entire member network, as we respond to this crisis.”
“We’re grateful to Loblaw for their longstanding support for local communities,” says Kirstin Beardsley, CEO of Food Banks Canada. “I’ve been saying this every year lately, but sadly, in 2024 we set yet another all-time national record for the number of visitors to food banks. As a recurring campaign, Feed More Families increases the overall capacity of the food-banking system to help people make ends meet. Thank you to Loblaw staff, customers and all other contributors to this campaign for your ongoing commitment to relieving hunger.”
Help your local food bank to feed more families during this time of great need! Leave a food gift in the collection bin at a local Loblaw store or make a cash donation at the register. Loblaw Companies will match the first $100,000 raised at its stores this holiday season.
