Home Blog June 2016 THANK YOU CANADA!

Summer is a particularly difficult time for families living with food insecurity as school supported breakfast and lunch programs close with the schools for the holidays. As 37% of the people turning to food banks for help are children, school holidays combined with the traditional drop in summer donations puts an added stress on families struggling to get by.
This past May, local food organizations, individual Canadians, caring companies and dedicated unions came together so that none of our neighbours would go hungry this summer.
Together we raised 1,270,670 meals through online donations, sponsorships and local food and fund drives in communities across Canada, an increase of more than 500,000 meals from the first year of the Every Plate Full campaign in 2015.
A significant part of this success came from the amazing involvement of two National Participants- IATSE and Great West Life.  IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts), its members and network of suppliers, surpassed their 2015 meal total of 175,000 meals by coming together and raising more than 240,000 meals in 2016.  Great West Life’s employees ramped up their national meal drive and raised more than 175,000 meals. In addition, their national reach also helped spread the message to help build awareness by sharing hashtags like #everyplatefull.
#everyplatefull certainly made an impression during the campaign with the messages around summer hunger being seen and shared more than 34 million times in social and mainstream media by Canadians coast to coast.
Every Plate Full is gaining momentum.  Growing by 21 new organizations this year, 126 food organizations came together in every province and one territory to help address the summer meal gap and keep the shelves and fridges full this summer.
Planning for Every Plate Full 2017 is already underway.
