Food Banker Spotlight – Diane Corkum, Project SHARE
We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Diane Corkum from Project SHARE in Niagara Falls, ON.

What is your role in food banking?
I am the outgoing Executive Director of Project SHARE in Niagara Falls.

Describe a typical day in one word.
Inspiring!

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
I sought meaningful work and I am grateful every day to contribute to “making a difference” in our community.

What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
Working collaboratively with an exceptional staff, committed volunteers and supporters to oversee and provide services for each person based on their unique individual needs.

What is the greatest challenge in your current role?
The “reply all” key – yikes!

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
People want choice and have more sense than what “experts” give them credit for. I wish for a Universal Basic Income so each person can choose which foods they wish to eat.

Which talent would you most like to have?
I would like to write poetry so good that it breaks your heart.

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
Some things come with little effort –don’t try so hard.

Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life
Strong women who speak up – Chrystia Freeland, Michelle Obama, Malala Yousefzai!

What is your idea of happiness?
A walk in the country at dawn with a golden retriever, a roaring fire to come home to and a good friend to share a laugh with.

What is your motto?
To quote Isak Dinesen, “The cure for anything is saltwater - tears, sweat, or the sea.

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I can still do cartwheels!

Your theme song?
I love the lyrics of Imagine by John Lennon.
