National Food Sharing System

Program Goals:Through our National Food Sharing System, we acquire and share large industry donations of food and consumer products and coordinate national-level and large-scale food drives for our food bank network of more than 450 Affiliate Members across Canada.

It’s proven to be effective: in 2010, for example, we raised more than 6 million kilograms of food, which was distributed through our network to local food banks. We constantly work to expand our ability to share more food, through operational improvements, capacity building programs, and the development of new acquisition channels.

How to participate: We are always looking for donations of safe, nutritious, good-quality food and consumer products. We invite your contribution of any of the following:

  • special product runs manufactured specifically for a dedicated donation to Food Banks Canada,
  • non-perishable food close to the best before date,
  • incorrectly labeled foods, misprinted packaging, damaged and imperfect items, and bulk ends,
  • outdated promotional items, discontinued products, special runs, packs where POs have been cancelled, or other inventory to be cleared out,
  • incorrectly weighed or measured foods that cannot be resold,
  • product returns or shipping errors that require pick-up.

Our Safe Food Handling Program helps to ensure that all donations are handled safely and appropriately. While we welcome all donations, here is our 10 Most Needed Items List: a list of the foods and household items most urgently needed by food banks. We also require donations of transportation and warehousing to help us offset the costs of these services.

Support: If your company is looking for a way to divert safe, good quality food and household products into the hands of Canadians who need them, or if you would like to make a specific product run in support of the food bank community or have warehouse or transportation services to donate, contact our Manager, National Food Sharing System at 1-877-535-0958 x225.

We are grateful to the many corporate donors who have provided food and household items over the past year.

The National Food Sharing System is financially supported by a number of donors, including Loblaw Companies Limited and Canadian Pacific.
